This morning I plugged my Azden ECZ990 shotgun microphone into the iPhone 4 using a KV Connection mini-plug external mic adapter. I had to test after a failed video made last week. Success with one type of mic does not mean that another will be the same. Optimism doesn’t eliminate the need for testing.
The ‘short’ setting on the Azden works best, ‘long’ doesn’t work at all, and the iPhone mic itself is pretty good but lets in room sound. The Azden is a great little microphone, but may not be the best choice for this kind of setup. And somewhere I’ve lost the windscreen. I’m sure there’s some kind of explanation for what’s going on inside the mic, adapter, or phone but I’m not an audio expert. I just know when it sounds good and when it sounds bad.
I had to boost audio levels in FCP for both short mic setting and iPhone, and reduce the level for long so that you won’t sue me for hearing loss. Obviously ‘long’ isn’t meant for holding right up to your mouth, so I’ll have to test at a distance. Four more mic tests to go.
The video here is with the front-facing VGA camera under a tungsten ceiling light.
