Today I start Fitwit’s “Body and Mind Challenge,” another round of nutrition challenge with an added element of improving mindset. I have had good successes with these, first losing 17 pounds and seven points of body fat in 2014, then another seven and four points in spring last year.
I have maintained pretty well in the meantime, but now my cookie fetish has taken hold of me again. The only thing that’s ever worked for me to make body changes is changing what I put in my mouth. And I like a challenge. And I want to get that Indiana Jones body from Raiders.
Part of this whole exercise is thinking about it, what we want to get, committing to it, and being accountable to someone (hi, thanks!). So, my three goals: 1. 15% body fat by the end of the challenge on Feb. 25. In addition to my obvious vanity, fat loss will help my crooked, arthritic spine be less needy. 2. I will begin averaging seven hours of sleep, because please, and 3. eliminate snacking after dinner. I know the giant sugar bombs I have right before bedtime have to be having a negative effect on my sleep.
My life in six months, one, and five years I expect to look a lot the same. Everything personally is pretty sweet right now and I want to ride the wave. With the world so awful it’s nice to have this oasis of mostly peaceful tranquility.
In five years the kids will be older, high school and second grade. The floors are re-finished, the fireplace is renovated, and the stained glass is installed. I’ll be a better sailor and have done some ocean travel. I will improve and be more successful in my profession. I am speaking at conferences. We will both have new, nicer cars. We have been on at least one snow-centered vacation and several water-centered ones. I have started water skiing. I am older than I look.
Today is challenge day one. According to my scale, I’m 186 and 20% today. I’m getting dunked on Saturday for the real science numbers.
Next tonight is getting through grown-up TV time without cookies and then only 40 days to go.
